Benefits of Access Control System

Access control systems let authorized employees get in and out of various parts of your office while keeping other unauthorized people out. Access control systems can range from simple electronic keypad access control system that secure a single door to large networked access control systems for multiple buildings that can include parking barriers, integration with time and attendance systems, multiple levels of access security and time schedules.

The increased security provided by a modern access control system is important to many types of businesses. Such access control systems also greatly simplify management of your facility: no need to replace lost keys, hunt down old keys from terminated employees, or wonder who has access to which areas. All access can be logged automatically for audit purpose.

In the good old days, electronic keypad (pin code) were used.  It is cost effective for simple access control to secure a room.  However, such pin code systems have the following short-comings :

  • Compromised Security : the pin code can be easily given by staff to any outsider.  Furthermore, the keypad can easily give the pin code away as the password pin digits on the keypad will be more worn out as compared to other digits.
  • Non-traceability : there is no way to know who actually has accessed the door.

The proximity card / proximity token based access control system solves these security problems, albeit partially.  Only holder of the proximity access card or token has access to the door.  Although proximity access card / token based access control system can provide the option of an audit trail, it still has the following short-coming :

  • Compromised Security : If the proximity card / token is lost, the one who found the lost card / token can have access to the offices until the lost was reported and the card / token de-registered from the system.   Proximity access card / token (and pin code) can also be passed to third party to open the door.

For offices with high security requirement, you will probably want to consider the fingerprint biometric or face recognition access control system.  As fingerprints are unique to each individual, such biometric fingerprint access control systems solve all the security problems of proximity access card or electronic keypad based systems.

The fingerprint biometric and face recognition technologies have matured significantly as compared to the early 2000s.  Recognition response time and accuracy of fingerprint biometric or face recognition system is now widely acceptable to be used for door access control and time attendance purpose.

The only disadvantage of fingerprint biometric is that there is still a small percentage of people (typically 2 to 3%) whose fingers are either too dry, too wet, groves on finger too shallow or fine, etc, whose fingerprints will have problem being enrolled into the system.

If all fingerprints on both hands failed to be enrolled, these small group of people can be given either proximity access card or pin code for accessing the door.

Alternatively, you can go for our reliable contactless face recognition access control system.
